War … what is it good for? Pacifism? War? Where do you stand?
Sunday, 23 June 2024 @ 14:00 - 16:00
Banbury Quakers will be hosting a discussion on Pacifism in a Warring World.
Quakers have a long history of speaking out against war, but wars around the world have caused some members to revisit and question this tradition. Is pacifism the antidote to war and violence or is it dangerous and deluded?
Roland Howard, a Quaker
I believe in pursuing non-violence but I believe preparing for war is one way of doing this
Maria Huff, a Quaker
We have to prioritise and promote peaceful ways of dealing with conflict, or we end up with more wars.
A Quaker forum for discussion.
This will be a discussion forum, in the manner of Quakers, with an emphasis on quiet discussion, active listening, and coming away knowing more rather than persuading others.
.
An invitation:
We invite you to a discussion in which we thoughtfully explore some of the following questions:
- Has pacifism ever worked?
- How do we deal with “bad actors” who WANT war?
- Is there such a thing as a just war?
- How do we create dialogue with people with very different views?
- Is mankind getting less warlike?
- What in ourselves are the seeds of conflict?
- How can we recognise darkness in ourselves?
- What are the components of a lasting peace?
